Texas hold’em is currently the most popular variety of poker to play online and live. Although it is very easy for a new player to learn it takes a great deal of skill and dedication to become a talented poker. In this article I will walk you through the basics of how a hand is played.

Texas hold’em can be played with anywhere from 2 to 20 players commonly most games start with 9 to 10 players at a table. To decide who goes first each player is dealt one card. The player with the highest value card is the first dealer. The dealer is indicated by a white dealer chip which is known as the button. After each hand the dealer position rotates to the left so each players gets a chance to play each position.

The idea of Texas holdem is to make the best possible 5 card hand by using the 2 cards dealt you are dealt and the 5 community cards. You can use any combination of these cards.

Before we get to dealing a hand we have two forced bets the big blind and the small blind. The small blind is the seat to the left of the dealer and the big blind is to the left of the small blind. The big blind is the minimum bet that a player can make. With the small blind being half the big blind. Once the blinds have been paid we move on to the dealing.

Pre-flop

The dealer can then commence by dealing two cards to each player one at a time starting with the player to his left. After the cards are dealt betting can commence with each player able to look at their cards they can either call the current bet being the big blind, raise or fold their hand. If no players raise the big blind then the player on the big blind can check his hand similar to a call as they will not fold and they are not required to put any extra money as they are already equal to the maximum net. Any player can raise or re-raise the current bet however if he has already raised he can only re-raise if someone else has raised the bet as opposed to calling the bet. The betting stops when each player either folded or called the bet.

Flop

The dealer discards a card by dealing a card to one side taking it out of play this is also known as burning a card. The dealer then deals three cards face down and then turns the the three cards face up. This is referred to as the flop, these three cards make up the first 3 cards of the 5 community cards that can be used by each player to make their best possible hand. The small blind player is now the first to act also known as being under the gun(UTG). They are the first to act on the rest of the rounds of betting. They can now choose to check, bet or fold. The round of betting ends when either all players have checked, folded or called the last bet or raise.

Turn

We now come to the turn, the dealer burns one card from the deck and deals the fourth community card. A round of betting then occurs as it did with the flop with betting starting with the small blind who is under the gun.

River

The dealer burns another card and then deals the fifth and final community card referred to as the river card. The final round of betting occurs and we come to the showdown were the remaining players display their cards with the best ranking hand winning.

The hand can finish at any time before reaching the showdown by having only one player left which will occur if all other players fold.
